| St. GEORGE'S CATHEDRAL |
|
From whichever direction you approach the town of Limburg, St. George’s Cathedral with its seven towers (number of sacraments) is omnipresent. The magnificent example of architecture was erected at the beginning of the 13th century as the church of the St. George’s Monastery founded in 910 and as the parish church of the town. Since the establishment of the diocese of Limburg in 1827 it has been the cathedral of the diocese. Time and again changes, rebuilding and restorations of the Lord’s house were made. The choice of colours for the outer cathedral was decided according to remainders of original paint from the 13th century. Old paint and dirt was removed over a period of many years and the original paint colours dating back to the time of construction were restored. The restoration lasted from 1969 to 1985. |
