| COAT OF ARMS OF TOWN |
|
The town of Limburg was already holding its own seal in about 1200. It has not been retained. A second seal is documented for the year 1243. It shows a ring of walls with two towers and a central gate tower, to which the coat of arms of the Lords of Limburg-Ysenburg is affixed. The inscription is: SIGILLUM CIVIUM LIMBURCH IUSTE IUDICATE; in English: Seal of the Town of Limburg judges fairly. A formal bestowal of the authorization as a town has not been granted but it is assumed that Limburg was regarded as a town even before 1200. The name Limburg is derived from the name “Lintburk”; linta = Linde (lime-tree) and burk = Burg (castle). |
